One and All!

Thank you for visiting our blog. We have a few things going on that we would like to mention.

If you have heard about us in the newspaper, we need to clarify one thing. PERC was started in the Alpine School district, but it's patrons (users) are not limited to the Alpine School District. PERC is available for every and any adult (or teen--with adult signature). Our services are for every adult who has access to the Orem Library, where we are located. There is no library card needed and items are due back within a week.

If you are a frequent user of PERC, we acknowledge that you already know how the system works and we look forward to seeing you again and again!

We will also be featuring the Teen Summer Game Days, this summer. If you have teenagers, this will be something to look forward to.

If you have not been to PERC, come down to the Orem Library and see what we are about!
We are happy to serve you, and we look forward to seeing you!

The journey to high self-esteem

The name of this game is "The Dinosaurs journey to High Self-Esteem." Take your child on a fun adventure! Teaching them and increasing their self-esteem without having to lift a finger (except to move the game pieces ;) ). This board game will help your child think about things that matter and will give you the opportunity to teach your child appropriate ways to interact with other children.
This game includes a colorful board and dinosaur game pieces which are visually stimulating!
The colored cards have different areas to building your child's self esteem!
Talk with your child about topics that may not come up very often in your day to day interactions. This game is useful as you are able to learn about where your child stands on values and how you can teach them, what you feel is right.

This is an amazing cooperative board game for parents and children. Children ages 5-12 can play and understand game cards easily. There can also be 2-6 players at a time.

Warp n' Woof

This game is called "Warp n' Woof," it is a 2-4 player cooperative game where you roll the die and travel along your color line to get to the other end. It seems easy right? Not Exactly.

With the roll of the die you will move along your colored line, until you come across a different color which you must jump. When you jump a color that is not your own, you send that color back to its starting point. The objective of
this game is to play cooperatively to get all the playing pieces to the end of their line.

You will cross another players piece and you will send them home-- What you do to avoid this is position your playing pieces to make a stack of 3 pieces, this will protect you and does not send you back to the starting point.

As you cross the paths of other players, you learn how to work along-side all players, so that you all reach your colored ends to win the game! This game creates the setting of working together and is suggested for adults and children 10 years and older.

Beginners Number Game

This game is called "1,2,3 go!" When children are able to recognize their numbers, this game can be stimulating and very fun.

Children will be able to count the circular cylinders then look at the number on the object making a connection. Children then place the playing pieces on the board.

It may be easy to use all the colors, so the child does not get confused. Then, at a later stage use the different colors for play. The numbers on the dice go up to either 3 or 6. For beginners, children can play happily with the numbers 1,2,3. To make it a little more challenging switch the dice to the 1-6 numbers. Have fun!

For Beginning Readers

"I 'm Reading Now!" These books are great for beginning readers. The characters are Ruby and Ben. There are 8 Scholastic books in one pack. So when you check these books out, it is checked out as one item.
"I'm reading now!" takes a whole-language approach to a child's language learning. The pages use whole words, pictures, and some repetition. It is simple. In some cases, you may read the first page to your child, and he/she will figure out the words on the next page. These books give material as a whole, children can learn to understand how the English language functions. There are variations to the whole-language approach; but, it mainly stresses the importance of natural language learning. Again, children can read whole words, look at pictures, and use the repetitiveness of these books to determine what they are reading.
Studies have shown that the use of this approach and another approach (Phonics Approach) is highly beneficial to your child's ability to learn and read.
You can find these books in the Beginning Language section of PERC and take it home to read with your child(ren). It will benefit them greatly.
A goal for this month is to read to you child for at least 20 min./week, if you have more time set
your goal to 20 min./day. If you already read 20 min./day to your child, Keep up the good work! Good luck! (note: it does not have to be just these books)

Let us know how you do!

The "Tutti Frutti" Game

Over the summer time, PERC sponsored the "Teen Summer Game Days" event. Teens got to play a lot of the games offered at PERC. Tutti Frutti was played on the very first game day and it was a favorite!

Tutti Frutti is recommended for older children and their parents. When the cards are flipped over there are fruits on the other side; players must recognize the fruits in the pictures and the amount of fruits to hit the bell. It is a fun and fast game that you and your child(ren) will love!
